Joseph "Papa Joe" DeFranco Obituary
Joseph "Papa Joe" DeFranco

AGE: 94 • Newport Beach, CA formerly of Asbury Park

Joseph "Papa Joe" DeFranco, an entrepreneur and marketing executive who moved in the circles of the rich and famous but took his greatest joy being with family and entertaining friends - passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 12 , 2017 at his home in Newport Beach, California. His business endeavors took him around the world and brought him into contact with Greek shippers, Saudi Arabian and Japanese royalty, presidents, diplomats and heads of state. He was a founding member of Big Canyon Country Club and a close friend of movie icons John "Duke" Wayne and Maureen O'Hara and legendary Notre Dame Football coach Ara Parseghian. Born on August 26, 1922 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Carmelo and Mary DeFranco, he landed in the middle of his two sisters and four brothers. Growing up along the boardwalk at the Jersey shore, his strong work ethic began at an early age and he was guided throughout his life by his Catholic faith. After serving in the Navy as a first gunnery mate on the USS South Dakota at the battle of Leyte Gulf, and decorated with the Purple Heart, he enrolled at UCLA and pledged Sigma Nu fraternity. Meeting his wife Barbara in an Italian class, they enjoyed 73 years of marriage. Whether it was the 21 Club in New York, an Italian café at Lake Como, or Barclay Kitchen in Los Angeles, he lived his life full of determination with a heart of compassion and a humor that transcended language. To you, Joseph, a devoted husband, father and great man, we say "Goodbye for now " and toast to you for all your years of hard work and positive influence. He is survived by his wife Barbara Jean DeFranco, his daughters Jean Renee Kroll, Barbara Jo DeFranco, and Suzanne Lynne DeFranco, 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
