Joseph J. Smith, 68 of Holmdel, NJ died August 31, 2017 at his home in Holmdel. He was born in Trenton, NJ on January 9, 1949. The son of John Smith and Josephine Belza Smith, and was pre-deceased by his sister Pauline Smith. He grew up in Trenton and joined the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Notre Dame High School. He served three years in the Marine Corps, being stationed in the continental United States, overseas, and Hawaii, attaining the rank of Corporal.

Upon separation from active duty, he attended the College of New Jersey and worked as a carpenter while being processed for a career as a police officer, for the Township of Clark, Union County, NJ. He received his basic police training at the State Police Academy in Sea Girt, NJ, where he continued advanced training in various areas of police related duties.

After retiring from the Clark PD, he was employed by the Monmouth County Park System, as a supervising carpenter for the construction division. He was considered a highly skilled carpenter & cabinet maker. He was instrumental in providing the leadership, knowledge and skills for building and maintaining numerous structures and projects for the Park System and residents of Monmouth County.

He was a member and past state president of the Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club and a member of the American Legion, Clark, NJ and Disabled American Veterans. He was also a retired member of the New Jersey State PBA, Local 600 and Infragard, (a civilian subdivision of the FBI).

He was a friend of Bill W. and Doctor Bob since June 6th, 1982, with many friends within that organization and others he helped in their recovery.

Joseph is survived by his daughter, Stacy Jo Smith of North Carolina and twin sons Daniel J. Smith and David J. Smith, at home.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 6-9 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Rd., Middletown. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 9 at 8 am at the funeral home. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered Saturday at 9:15 am at St. Catharine's Church, Middletown Rd., Holmdel.
