Joseph "Gene" Mack, 85, died peacefully on Wednesday September 6, 2017.

Born in Long Branch in 1932, Gene was a Freehold native and graduate of Freehold High School, Class of 1951. During the spring of his senior year, Gene enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served for three years during the Korean War. A proud veteran, Gene was honorably discharged in 1954, achieving the rank of Sgt. He was a lifelong member of the CPL Philip A. Reynolds Detachment Marine Core League, Freehold.

In 1952, Gene married Jean Marie Delatush, and together they raised three children in Colts Neck.

Gene was employed at Hominy Hill Farms in Colts Neck, for over 40 years, and attended Cook College for Turf Management. Gene was a lifetime member of the Golf Course Superintendent Association of New Jersey. He retired as a Golf Superintendent for the Monmouth County Park System.

Gene was predeceased by his parents, James and Isabelle (White) Mack, sisters, Marie Slattery and Anna Belle, and brothers, Harold McNamara, John F., James Earl, Robert Daniel, Patrick Henry, & Harvey.

Gene is survived by his wife Jean, his sister, Margaret Hanlon (Robert), his children, Joseph Mack (Irene), Kathleen Hesslein (Steve), and Cynthia Mack (Alain Robillard). Also surviving are his grandchildren, Alainah Robillard, Daniel (Christi) Hesslein, Stephany Hesslein, Paige Robillard, Joseph Mack, and his great grandchildren Nathan and Natalie Hesslein.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold. Interment will be private.
