Joseph Patrick Fitzsimmons Obituary
Joseph Patrick Fitzsimmons

AGE: 78 • Jackson Township

Joseph Patrick Fitzsimmons, 78, known as "Fitz" to his friends and "Poppy" to his family, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, at home. Joseph was born in Manhattan, NY, and raised in Brooklyn, NY, moving to Jackson Twp., in 1963 where he lived for 50 years.

He was a loving husband, devoted father, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, coach and friend. Joe fought bravely in his battle with a progressive brain disease and finally succumbed peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his 4 children, Michael, Trish (Patty), Joseph, Tracey; 11 grandchildren, Ellie, Ian, Emma, Joshua, Sadie, Joe, Jack, Julia, Jenna, Sam, and Matt; many nieces and nephews; and his wife of 57 years Connie, who faithfully cared for him and supported him throughout.

Joe was an honorable family man who at age 16 cared for his mother and 2 brothers when his own father died suddenly. He went on to marry Connie and dedicated his life to her and to raising their children.

He was a successful sheet metal mechanic and foreman who worked in the trade for 46 years out of Local union 28 until he retired at the age of 62.

The only thing that came close to his loyalty to his family was his passion for The NY Giants. "Fitz" was active in the community, volunteering to coach football, umpire baseball, and was bar chairman for a number of years at the Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered as a straight shooting, no nonsense man who could be counted on in any situation.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015 at the George S. Hassler Funeral Home, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson Twp. A funeral gathering will be offered at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015 at the funeral home. His Funeral Liturgy will follow at 9:30 a.m. at St Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 935 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson Twp. Interment will follow in St. Anne's Cemetery, 1610 Allenwood Rd., Wall, NJ 07719. Immediately following, friends and family will gather to celebrate Joe's life at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 401 Bartley Rd., Jackson, NJ 08527. If so desired, donations may be made in Joseph's memory to the , 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834 and would be greatly appreciated.
