AGE: 90 • Oceanport

Joseph Schiavone, 90 of Oceanport, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at his home of 62 years. Joseph was born on August 6, 1926 to the late Silvio Schiavone and Anna Squillante Schiavone in Monmouth Memorial Hospital, graduated from Long Branch High School, attended Seton Hall College, and then the School of Modern Photography in New York City. While commuting there, he met his future wife, Joan Dickson West. They were married in 1951.

From 1951-1975, he worked at Fort Monmouth's Signal School teaching Still and Motion Picture Photography. When the Signal School moved, he joined The Scientific Technical Photo Department at The Hexagon and retired in 1983. Joe loved photographing weddings on weekends and told everyone that he "chased brides." He was a volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul of St. Michael's Church, helping to collect food for the needy and loved being a member of the Long Branch Old Guard.

Joe was predeceased by his parents and his brother Robert. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years and his four children: JoAnne Schiavone and her husband Drew Mearns of Wilmington, Delaware; Susanne Schiavone Metaxas and her husband Eric of Manhattan, New York; Joseph P. Schiavone and his wife Caroline of Tinton Falls, New Jersey; Thomas C. Schiavone and his wife Lauren of Oceanport, New Jersey; and his eight grandchildren: Elizabeth, Andrew, Theresa, Norma, Brittany, Annemarie, Jonathan, and Annerose.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017 from 4-8 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave. (corner of Third Ave.) in Long Branch. Funeral, Saturday; 9:30 am from the funeral home followed by a 10:30 am Mass at St. Michael's Church, West End. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery in Oceanport. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Vincent de Paul of Saint Michael's Church, 800 Ocean Avenue, Long Branch, New Jersey 07740 (www.stmichaelnj.com).
