Fr. Juniper Alwell, OFMConv died Thursday September 10, 2009 at Community Medical Center, Toms River, NJ. Born in Schenectady, NY, he was the son of the late William & Evelyn Conlin Alwell. He was brother of the late William & Clare Alwell. Father Juniper was professed as a Conventual Franciscan Friar on September 16, 1951, Middleburg, NY; and his solemn vows on September 17, 1954, Rensselaer, NY and was ordained to the priesthood in Rome, Italy on June 8, 1956. He was a teacher and Vocation Director, Staten Island, NY; Teacher at Siena College, Loudonville, NY; Director of College Seminary Program, Rensselaer, NY; Pastor in Hoboken, NJ; Burlington, NC; Covenant House, NYC; Vicar Provincial, Union City, NJ; Guardian St. Francis Friary, Staten Island, NY; Chaplain Hancock Air Force Base, Syracuse, NY; Director of Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine, Fonda, NY. He had been at St. Catharine of Siena RC Church, Seaside Park, since 2006.
He is survived by two nieces Lynn Winslow of Sarasota, FL and Patricia Gremmler of Albany, NY.
A wake will be held at St. Catharine of Siena RC Church, 50 E Street, Seaside Park on Monday September 14, 2009 from 9:00am to 10:00am followed by a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. A wake will then be held at Holy Family RC Church, Albany, NY on Tuesday September 15 from 4:00pm-8:00pm. The Franciscan Wake Service will be held at 7:00pm in the church. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday September 16 at 11:00am followed by interment in the Friars Plot in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie, NY. Donations to the Franciscan Friars, Retirement Fund, Box 629, Rensselaer, NY in memory of Father Juniper would be appreciated. Timothy E.
