AGE: 98 • South Amboy

Margaret "Fran" Delaney Keenan, 98, formerly of South Amboy, NJ passed away February 27, 2017 at Bayside Manor Assisted Living in Keansburg, NJ, her residence for the past several years. Mrs. Keenan had former residences in Sea Bright, Atlantic Highlands, and, for most of her life, in South Amboy, NJ.

Mrs. Keenan was born in South Amboy on April 12, 1918, and resided there until 2001. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Grammar and High Schools and a communicant of St. Mary's R.C. Church. She earned her B.A. in Education at Newark State College, and her M.A. in Reading from Kean College. She was employed as a Reading Teacher for 25 years in the South Amboy Elementary School.

Mrs. Keenan was a member of the NEA, the NJEA, the Middlesex County Retired Educators, and was Charter President of St. Mary's High School PTA. She was also a member of the Sea Bright Senior Citizens Association and a communicant of Holy Cross R.C. Church in Rumson, NJ.

Her love of teaching culminated as the founder of the Caring Listeners Reading Program in St. Mary's Elementary School. As the leader of the program she mentored volunteers, addressed educators at reading conferences in New Jersey and California, and evangelized the power of reading for children of all ages.

Mrs. Keenan was proud of her Catholic faith, her Irish ancestry, and her love of tradition, education, travel, and family accomplishments. She was beloved by her neighbors, students, fellow educators, family friends and acquaintances, and the Sisters of Mercy.

Mrs. Keenan was predeceased by her parents George and Margaret Delaney of South Amboy, and her sister Helen Fitzpatrick and husband Robert of Bernardsville, NJ.

She was married for 53 years to her childhood sweetheart Joseph L. Keenan, Sr., who died in 1995. She was the mother of beloved Joseph L. "Larry" Keenan, Jr., who died in 1947. She is survived by one daughter, Louise Ellvinger of South Amboy and her husband Mark, and four sons: George and wife Marlena of Bethesda, MD, Frank and wife Sherri of Highlands, NJ, John and wife Jon of Falmouth, MA, and David and wife Mimi of Tinton Falls, NJ. She is also survived by eight Keenan grandsons and wives: Daniel and Michelle, Brendan and Jaci, Eamon and Abby, Bryson and Missy, Justin and Kristy, and Travis, Conor, and Shane, and by one granddaughter, Shauna Farrington. She is survived by seven Keenan great-grandchildren: Ethan, Lilly, Luke, Finnian, Liam, Reid, and Isla, and by one goddaughter, Peggy Fitzpatrick.

The Keenan family is eternally grateful to the owners and staff of Bayside Manor Assisted Living and to Ascend Hospice and her special caregiver Sylvia for their care and love.

A Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday March 4, 2017 at 12 noon at St. Mary's Church, South Amboy, followed by interment in St. Mary's Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of The Gundrum Service "Home For Funerals" 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy.

In lieu of flowers, the Keenan family asks friends to donate books or gifts to a local public library in Mrs. Keenan's name.
