Margaret (Murray) McCaffrey-Hanney Obituary
Margaret McCaffrey- Hanney

AGE: 90 • Toms River

Margaret McCaffrey-Hanney (nee Murray) of Toms River, NJ passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Jersey Shore Medical, Center in Neptune, NJ. She was 90 years old.Margaret was born in Fox Harbor, Newfoundland on May 2, 1926, the youngest of 6 children. Her parents died when she was a child, necessitating a move to the Belvedere Orphanage in St. Johns, where she lived until the age of 17. She spoke kindly of The Sisters of Mercy and their care and was visibly upset when the former orphanage site ( Margaret's Place) was badly burned last month. After leaving the orphanage she worked on the Naval Base in Argentia where she was reunited with her siblings and introduced to a dashing young Marine named Norman Hanney. (Their love story can be seen on YouTube). After brief stays in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Margaret settled in Park Slope, Brooklyn to begin a new life with her sister Rose. The stories about their days at Stouffers were some of her best. Margaret was an engaging storyteller and took liberties with each retelling. She made friends with people of every race and creed. She was a great listener and loved to "dig out" peoples' stories. The more marrow, the better!

Margaret's circle of friends and family was impressive --from her JP Morgan days to her part time jobs at Community Hospital and The Madonna Nursing Home in Brooklyn. She made frequent summer trip to Newfoundland, the most recent in 2015. She worked until the age of 70 - more for the social interaction than for the money. She was active on bowling leagues and walking groups and even took painting lessons with her Brooklyn friends.

We all know the story of how "Love Came To Town" 56 years later and swept her away to Tom's River, NJ. Norman and Margaret had 14 incredible years together, dying two weeks apart to continue their love story in the big Boston Market in the sky!

Margaret was preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret and first husband, James McCaffrey

Margaret is survived by her 7 children - James, Rosemary, Robert, Eileen, John, Virginia and Maureen, her stepson Joe and her favorite "outlaws" - Kathie, Steve, Robert, and Glen.

She will be loved and remembered by her 11 grandchildren,7 great grandchildren and countless friends, family, and co-workers.Her wish was to be buried back home in Newfoundland with her parents.

A Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 10:30 am St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Toms River, NJ.

Repast to follow at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, Toms River, NJ 12:00pm - 2:30pm. Bring a Margaret Picture and a favorite story.
