Marlene Scanlan, 81, of Jupiter, Florida, passed away on March 17, 2017 at Amazing Grace Assisted Living Facility in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Marlene was born in West Oak Lane, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to William and Helen Gruber April 20, 1936. She was graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1954 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple University in 1973. She followed up with a Master of Education degree in 1976. Marlene spent her twenty seven year career in teaching, primarily as an elementary school educator, reading specialist and learning disabilities consultant in the School District of Delanco, New Jersey.

Marlene was graduated Summa Cum Laude in May, 1973 and was honored as a Temple Presidential Scholar and also as the Outstanding Teacher of the Delanco Schools in 1987. She subsequently amassed thirty additional credits toward a doctorate degree prior to retirement in May, 2000. Marlene married Gerard Scanlan in 1958 and spent the next ten years as a Marine Officer's wife at various Marine Corps bases in the United States. She resided in Willingboro, NJ during her teaching career.

After moving to Jupiter, FL, she spent summers in Beach Haven, NJ and Readsboro, Vermont. As a child she spent many summers along the New Jersey shore and thoroughly enjoyed being near the ocean. Of the many activities Marlene enjoyed, she spent much of her free time quilting and playing bridge with her friends.

Marlene is survived by her husband, Gerard, of sixty years. She leaves behind her cherished children, Eileen Trautz and Patricia Hoff, Jr. She was adored by her grandchildren Zoe, Mia, Deana, Rebecca, Eric and Daniel. She also leaves her sisters, Anne Heiser and Doris Diamond. She leaves her devoted Irish Setter, Denver. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the .
