AGE: 80 • Middletown

Martha A. Burns, 80, died peacefully Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Bayside Manor in Keansburg.

Martha was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Richard "Dick" Burns in September 2012, and by her eldest son, Richard.

Surviving are her children and their spouses: son Chris and wife Terry Burns, Keyport; daughter Barbara and husband Tom Hettwer, Freehold; son Tom Burns, Eatontown; daughter Marianne and husband Ed Stelmaszczyk, Kinnelon; son Andrew Burns, Keyport; son Bill Burns, Middletown; and grandchildren Patricia and Michael Stelmaszczyk, Kinnelon.

She was born in New York City on April 29, 1932, the daughter of James and Martha Conlin. Martha and Dick met in Jersey City, and were married in 1953. They lived in Middletown for 49 years, and were celebrated as a devoted and loving couple at their most recent residence, Bayside Manor in Keansburg.

A teacher's aid at Middletown Village School for many years, she took particular joy in working with little children. Martha was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Middletown Elks BPOE 2179, where she was honored as Woman of the Year. She and Dick often traveled with their fellow Elks to the Caribbean for vacations.

Martha retained the gentility and graciousness of a bygone era, and demonstrated great strength and courage throughout her illness, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 25, 2012 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered Monday, November 26, 2012 at 10:30 am at St. Mary's Chapel, 26 Leonardville Rd., Middletown. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
