AGE: 101 • Lakewood

Beloved mother, "Gramartha", great-"Gramartha", friend and teacher, Martha Gold died peacefully in her sleep December 5, 2016 surrounded by her family. Born in New York City in January, 1915, Martha received a B.A. in German from Hunter College in 1936. She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Philip Gold and their daughter, Karen Gold Gray. Mrs. Gold is best remembered for teaching English, German and advising students at Lakewood High School. She was also a dedicated volunteer and activist both before and after her teaching career. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Gold Cangin Bennett of Annapolis, MD; four grandchildren: Stephanie Cangin of Charlottesville, VA, David Gray (Suzanne) of Highlands Ranch, CO, Jennifer Gray Broadman of Abbot, TX and Andrea Cangin of Pittsburgh, PA; five great-grandchildren (Kasi Broadman Plett, Rachel Broadman and William, Alexander and Kevin Gray); her brother Saul Rosenstock (Lillian) of Monroe Township, NJ; son-in-law James Gray (Elizabeth Trasko) of Toms River, NJ and devoted former students Robert and Nancy Edgar Wheeler of Whiting, NJ; and Cynthia Sturm (Jeff Murray) of Toms River, NJ. In lieu of formal services, family and friends joined her to celebrate her 100th birthday. Mrs. Gold donated her body to the Maryland Anatomy Board to teach medical and nursing students. Contributions to honor her lifelong commitment to education may be made to the Lakewood High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, 26 Circle Drive, Manchester, NJ 08759 in Martha Gold's name.
