Martin Van Buren "Marty" Tompkins Jr. Obituary
Martin "Marty" Van Buren Tompkins, Jr.

AGE: 89 • Palm Beach Gardens, FL formerly of Toms River

Martin "Marty" Van Buren Tompkins, Jr., 89 years, 10 months and 7 days of age, died peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 2, 2016.

Marty leaves his beloved wife of 69 years, Doris Elizabeth Lilley Tompkins; four daughters: Donna Perez (Miguel) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Carol Manna (John) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Irene "Renie" Dodge of Winterville, GA; Alice Trembulak (Tom) of Tucson, AZ; a brother William Tompkins (whatshername? Jayne) of Toms River, NJ; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren who fondly referred to him as "Super Pop."

Marty was born in Bayonne, NJ and moved to Toms River in 1941 where he met the love of his life and high school sweetheart Doris.

He was an accomplished athlete at Toms River High School and was inducted in the Toms River, NJ Basketball Hall of Fame.

A carpenter by trade, he taught shop at the very high school he graduated from and was well respected and loved by his many students who fondly referred to him as "Mr T."

He was known to say "get with the program," "another fine job," and "you gotta wanna."

Marty and Doris retired to Palm Beach Gardens, FL 27 years ago where he loved to sit out on their porch and watch the golfers play by. This was his paradise.

He was a true character and a selfless man - even in death he donated his body to Science Care for research.

We love you and will miss you Pop.
