Mary Kuklakis Obituary
Mary Kuklakis

New Brunswick - Mary Kuklakis passed away peacefully into eternal rest on August 8, 2018 surrounded by her children and only seven weeks from her 103th birthday. She was born in New Brunswick in 1915 and lived there her entire life.

She was a lifelong communicant and oldest member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church--a church that her family helped found 100 years ago--, the Ladies Philoptochos Society, Daughters of Penelope, and St. George Senior Citizens.

One expression that she would often say in wonderment was "the things I have seen:" World Wars, the Depression, 18 presidents, commercial air travel, television, space exploration, great advances in science and medicine, horses replaced by automobiles, to name a few. She welcomed 26 descendants into the world, all of whom she cherished and to whom she was completely dedicated.

She was a very diplomatic, genteel, and proper person who, along with her husband, raised her children to be caring, responsible adults, characteristics that were shown in the wonderful at-home care that her children provided. She greatly appreciated her extended family, her neighbors, her friends, and the people who cared for her in her waning months. An important part of her social life was her pride in her Greek heritage: she loved the food, music, and customs, while always being a proud American. Many people saw her as a role model that greatly influenced and altered their lives, and she was an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be missed, but will remain in the loving memory of her relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Peter, and is survived by her daughter Penelope Dahlheimer, daughter Antigone (Ann) Alvarez and son-in-law Manny, her son Michael and daughter-in-law Fern, seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, sister Joyce Wood, brother Steven Sqourakis, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, from 3-7 p.m. at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St., Somerset, NJ 08873. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1101 River Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854. Interment will follow at Van Liew Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the St. George Memorial Fund, 1101 River Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854.
