Mary M. Stewart Obituary
Mary M. Stewart

AGE: 91 • Belmar

Mary M. Stewart, nee Hackett, 91, of Belmar, passed away peacefully at her home on February 9, 2017. Born in Jersey City, she lived most of her life in Kearny, before retiring to Belmar in 1988. Mary worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as well as West Hudson Hospital. Mary met and married the one true love of her life, Albert Stewart in 1951. The two were inseparable and shared many great adventures together. Mary's greatest pleasure was raising her six children. She was a true champion for them. She was a devout Catholic, earning Catholic mother of the year honors and served as President of the Rosary Society at St. Cecilia's Church in Kearny as well as enjoyed many years and made many good friends as a member of the church's Pre Cana Group. Mary loved to bake and was well known for her lemon meringue and strawberry rhubarb pies, which were the best!! After retiring to Belmar, she was an active member of the Belmar Woman's Club where she formed many lasting friendships. Due to her skill with knitting needles, Mary also began to knit baby hats for infants in area hospitals. There are probably a few hundred infants that came home from the hospital in a blue or pink hat made by Mary nicknamed a "Nanahat". Mary was an avid reader and skilled cruciverbalist. She will best be remembered for her unselfish and unwavering commitment to make life better for everyone she met with her kind smile and gracious words. She truly impacted many. Mary's "jewels" later in life were her 9 grandchildren. Nana loved them all dearly and marveled at their accomplishments. Mary was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Albert, in 2015. She is survived by her six children, Rosemary Smith, Joann Stewart, Janice Seymour and husband John, Eileen Mervine and husband George, A.Thomas Stewart and James Stewart and wife Virginia, as well as nine grandchildren, Lee Meccia, wife Sarah and great granddaughter, Riley, Kerry Lynn Feeney and husband Tim, Alexandria Baker and husband Nick, Eric Stewart, Andrew Stewart, William Stewart, Caroline Seymour, John Seymour and Phoebe Mervine. Mary is also survived by her brother, James "Bud" Hackett and sister-in-law, Nanette Edmiston as well as many nieces and nephews. The family sends a very special thank you to all of the caregivers (angels) who took such wonderful care of our Mom as well as our Dad, but especially Natalia and her husband Myron, who took such great care of and treated our parents as if they were their own. We can't thank them enough. Visitation will be held at Oceanside Memorial Home, 2014 Main Street, Lake Como on Monday February 13, 2017 from 4pm-7pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Rose Catholic Church, Belmar on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Belmar First Aid Squad, 414 9th Avenue, Belmar NJ 07719 or Meridian Hospice Care, 1345 Campus Pkwy, Suite 82, Neptune, NJ 07753.
