Mary Whitcher Crowther, 85, of Spring Lake, NJ, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, NJ. Mary was born on May 20, 1931 in Jamaica, Queens, NY where she lived for 12 years, then moved with her family to Mt. Holly, NJ. She was a graduate of Mt. Holly High School where she played on the girls' field hockey team. She went on to graduate from Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia where she received her R.N. Several years later, she graduated with a B.A. from Rowan University. Mary was a very talented nurse, being one of the first ICU nurses in Cooper Hospital in Camden. She later became a teacher of Vocational Nursing at Edgewood High School in Camden County followed by 17 years of School Nursing in Eatontown, NJ.

Mary was married to a Methodist minister, Rev. Robert W. Crowther, for over 65 years and loved participating in Methodist Church activities, following him from Camden to Atlantic City, Stratford, Spring Lake and finally Avalon. She became a Sunday school teacher at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Spring Lake and was a very active member there. She also volunteered for the Girl Scouts and the South Seaville Camp Meeting Association. Mary traveled widely, having been to Nairobi, Kenya, The Holy Land, Rome, Venice, Hawaii, Singapore, Seoul and Hong Kong among other destinations. Her favorite vacation spots were Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. She also traveled extensively in Canada, including Newfoundland. Mary was very kind and thoughtful, both to her family and to all whom she met. She was a very sociable person and loved entertaining.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Dr. Burr Whitcher and Jessie Sprowles Whitcher; her sister, Jeanette Whitcher Kalas; and her brother, Robert Royce Whitcher. She is survived by her husband, Robert; her four children, Robert III of Wanamassa, NJ, Barbara Louise Kent and her husband John of Birmingham, AL, Deborah Lynne and her husband Walter of Winston-Salem, NC, and Jonathan Burr and his wife Molly of Stanton, NJ; 8 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Arlene Whitcher Judge and her husband Larry of Albion, IL.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 9:30-10:30am at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 907 4th Ave. Spring Lake, NJ. Funeral Service will follow at 10:30am. Burial will be private. Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan, NJ is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
