Melvin "Mel" Kleis

Lakewood - Melvin "Mel" Kleis, 95, of Lions Head Woods, passed away January 28, 2018 at Jersey Shore Medical Center. Born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, he resided in Bogota, NJ for 36 years before retiring to Lakewood in 1988.

Mel served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and then worked for Westinghouse, in the Elevator Division, as a Manufacturing Engineer for 44 years. He attended Newark College of Engineering and Stevens Institute of Engineering. While living in Bogota he was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. After his move to Lakewood he was an active member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Toms River. He married Marguerite "Midge" Werther on September 8, 1946; they celebrated 71 years of marriage last fall. They enjoyed extensive travel around the world together. Mel also enjoyed walking and doing home repairs; and was always happy to help his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Midge, he is survived by his loving family: daughters and their spouses Charlene Treubert (Dennis) and Denise Kleis (Beth Salerno); granddaughters Heidi Meehan (Jason) and Jessica Kiely (Derek); four great grandsons; and his sister Marion Daly. He was preceded in death by his parents Emma and Charles Kleis and his sister Lois Laumbach.

A memorial service will be held on April 7, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Toms River at 3 pm. The family will receive friends at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1500 Hooper Avenue, Toms River, NJ 08753 or Meals on Wheels of Ocean County, 225 Fourth Street, Lakewood, NJ 08701.
