AGE: 57 • New Monmouth

Michael J O'Brien, "Big Mike" 57, of New Monmouth, NJ, died on November 1, 2017 in Holmdel, NJ. He was born in Long Branch, and lived in Middletown all of his life.

Mike, a lifelong racing fan, was a videographer for more than 30 years and the owner of Motorsport Video Productions. He was a well-known and well-loved fixture at raceways across the north-east including Mahoning Valley Speedway, Lehighton, PA; Evergreen Raceway Park, Drums, PA; Path Valley Speedway, Spring Run, PA; Selinsgrove Speedway, Selingsgrove, PA and New Egypt Speedway, New Egypt, NJ.

Michael worked for years at Shop Rite in Middletown as well as at Life Style contact lenses, UPS, Naylors Auto Parts and The Stone Pony, Asbury Park in his younger years. He was a former member of the Port Monmouth First Aid and an Eagle scout. Michael was a graduate of Mater Dei High School (Class of 1978) where he played football and track & field. He was a communicant of St Mary's parish all of his life.

Mike was quick-witted and kind, with a fast joke, a bright smile and a most generous heart. He loved cars and racing, cooking and buffalo wings, the Jets, Late Night with David Letterman and Monty Python. He was a world traveler, an amateur magician, a licensed SCUBA diver and an altar boy.

Surviving are his parents, John and Sally O'Brien of New Monmouth; brother and partner, Thomas O'Brien and Vicente Calvo of Madrid, Spain; brother and sister-in-law, William and Joanne O'Brien of Navesink; nephew Jacob O'Brien of Montclair University, uncle Nicholas Kaiser of Eatontown, first cousins Dorothy & Don Burlingame of Parishville, NY and Daniel & Angela Walling of Houston TX, dear friends-like-siblings, Robert Oberle of Port Monmouth, Carol Matyas of Barnegat, Patrick King of Williamson, GA and beloved cousins from Clifton, NJ to New York state, Maryland, Connecticut and New Hampshire.

Visitation will be held Monday, November 6, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday at 9:15am at the funeral home. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered at 10:30 at St. Mary's Chapel, 26 Leonardville Rd., New Monmouth. Burial will follow at Mt Olivet Cemetery Middletown, NJ.,
