Norman Hanney Obituary
Norman Hanney

AGE: 94 • Toms River

Norman Hanney was born in Clinton Massachusetts October 2, 1922. He attended Saint Johns School while also peddling papers, doing odd jobs, and selling Christmas wreaths door to door to assist his family during the Depression. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Veterans Day 1942 and was stationed in Newfoundland, where he formed warm friendships with the local people. He would return to visit Newfoundland for 50 years, to visit his friends. Norman was known for his lifelong love of music, and his love of song. He married Catherine Kenny in 1946. He worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works, where he was known for his reliability, and was an avid student of people and politics, working on a number of campaigns. He regarded political figures as ordinary people and did not hesitate to call on them to visit. He was a devout Catholic but saw God as a friend he could talk to like anyone else. He saw every situation as having an obvious right and wrong, but never judged a person. Everyone was a friend in the making, and every skill was something that he could master if he tried. He had two sons, Norman and Joseph, and was always there for them. After retirement, he settled in Toms River New Jersey. Catherine passed away in 2000. A chance meeting in 2003 resulted in his reunion and marriage with his World War II sweetheart Margaret McCaffrey, after almost 60 years. Norman was known for his solid optimism, ready friendship, humor, and kindness by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Margaret, his son Joseph, 7 stepchildren, three grandchildren, and more dear friends then can be counted. A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday April 12, 2017 10:30am at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Toms River, NJ. The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 145 St. Catherine Blvd. Toms River, NJ 08755 is charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent by visiting
