Peter Pete Balas Jr.

AGE: 88 •

Peter Balas, Jr. (Pete), 88, died Saturday, November 19, 2016 at his son Peter's home in Pleasanton, CA after a recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

He leaves his daughter, Christina J. Balas; his sons, Peter C. Balas and Andrew B. Balas; his nine grandchildren; his sister, Olga diPierro; and many close friends behind.

Born on January 17, 1928 in Litmanova, Slovakia, the son of Peter and Mary Balas, Peter came by boat to the United States through Ellis Island in New York City at the age of 2. He returned to Slovakia with his mother temporarily due to an illness, and returned for good to New York City at age 7. As a young man growing up during the Great Depression, Peter worked as a shoe shine boy on Wall Street and a soda jerk as a teenager. He graduated with honors from Stuyvesant High School, and entered military service in the Air Force. After his honorable discharge, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he earned both a Bachelor and Masters in Electrical Engineering. While at MIT, Peter met and married. Constance Lee Kresser, a graduate of the New England School of Art and native Bostonian.

Peter's professional career started with the Bell System at Western Electric and then to Bell Laboratories doing signal processing research. Later he joined a start-up, InterData, designing minicomputers and celebrated an IPO with this fast-growing enterprise based in Oceanport, NJ. Corporate acquisitions brought him to Perkin Elmer and later Concurrent Computer.

Peter lost his wife, Constance, when she was 41 from cancer and raised his three children on his own. After retiring, he remained busy with his vegetable and flower garden as well as helping raise his grandchildren in New Jersey. In 1999 he married Katherine Fox of Solana Beach, CA. Peter spent the last 18 months of his life with his son, Peter C. Balas, and his two grandsons, Christopher and Peter J. Balas in Pleasanton, CA (San Francisco Area). He remained an avid reader and very active until the end.

Services will be held on December 28, 2016 at 11 AM at Christ Episcopal Church, 90 Kings Highway, Middletown, NJ. Burial will be private. Peter will be buried next to his first wife, Constance Lee Kresser, at Christ Episcopal Church. For more information contact Christina Balas at 732.229.0884.
