AGE: 83 • Holiday City Carefree, Berkeley Twp.

Philip T. Spruyt, 83, of Holiday City Carefree section of Berkeley Twp., NJ passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017 at home. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he lived in Toms River for 22 years before moving to Berkeley Twp. 16 years ago. Philip was a Police Officer for the New York Police Department for 20 years then was a Pump Station Foreman for the Ocean County Utilities Authority for 20 years.

He was a US Navy Korean War veteran, serving from 1952 - 1956.

Philip was a parishioner of St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Twp., and was a member of the American Legion Post 166, Lakewood, NJ, the Toms River Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign War, the Disabled American Veterans, the Silverton Fishing Club, the Tin Can Sailors, the Ocean County Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Police Benevolent Association.

Phil was a devout family man and Christian. He was a great storyteller and enjoyed gatherings with family and friends. He was an avid fisherman, had a good Irish wit and a big kind heart always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Proudly served our country and our community. He will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure to meet him.

He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor in 2008,his two sons Brian Spruyt in 2006 and Thomas Spruyt in 2012, his parents Emiel and Margaret (O'Connor) Spruyt, two brothers Michael and Kenneth Spruyt and a grandson Michael Burke.

Philip is survived by his two daughters Diane Ford and her husband Kevin of Toms River and Sheila Spruyt of Toms River, his sisters Carol Ryan, Barbara Spruyt, Kathleen Spruyt, Maureen Kaseta and his brother Oscar Spruyt, five grandchildren Elizabeth Price, Christina Ford, Caitlyn Burke, Jennifer Marsh, Jared Bartholomew and four great grandchildren Lachlan, Hudson, Dominick and Arya.

The family will receive friends on Friday January 6, 2017 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday January 7, 2017 9:30am at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Twp. Entombment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River.
