Phyllis Lewis Obituary
Phyllis Lewis

Manasquan - Phyllis Lewis, Manasquan, died on February 8 at the age of 93. Phyllis was born in Philadelphia on October 18, 1924. Always so pretty, with golden curls and sparking blue eyes, she was elected as Philadelphia May Queen when she was six years old. After moving to Union, New Jersey in grade school, she attended Union High School and forged lifelong friendships with eight of her classmates, calling themselves "The Variety Girls." The club members continued to meet for lunch into their 80s and 90s. After high school, Phyllis received her RN from Jersey City School of Nursing and became an airline attendant for Eastern Airlines, after which she practiced nursing for 40 years. She worked most of her nursing career at Fitkin Hospital (now Jersey Shore University Medical Center), where she was well-loved for her compassion and care.

In 1947, she married Albert (Bud) Ford and they had six children. In 1970 she remarried the love of her life, Howard Lewis, and was married for 48 years. Phyllis and Howard lived in Florida and Delaware together. She made friends everywhere she went. They eventually moved back to New Jersey to be with their family. She continued making special friendships after moving to Willow Springs Nursing Home, with her two favorite nurses Mel and Brianne.

Phyllis was pre-deceased by two sons, Glenn Ford and Gregg Ford, and grandson, Sean Ford. She is survived by her husband, Howard Lewis, Brick; her children, Gail Pyle (Don), Lake Oswego, Ore.; Gary Ford (Eileen), Point Pleasant; Gerri Coyle (Chris), Brielle; and Gay Ford (Thomas Pfeiffer) Manasquan; as well as 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Phyllis will be remembered for her kindness, grace and appreciation for the small things in life - a baby's chubby hands, a "delicious" breeze, and the twinkle in a child's eyes.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial 10 am Saturday February 17, 2018 at Saint Denis Church, Manasquan. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite library or charity. Arrangements were under the care of Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan, NJ.
