AGE: 92 • Whiting

Richard Prentice Newton, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children on April 27, 2017 at home at age of 92. Dick was born in Avoca, Pennsylvania. He learned to fish with his father and Uncle Neil, a lifelong passion he shared with friends and family. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and attended Drew University in Madison, NJ under the V12 officer training program from which he was honorably discharged. In 1955 he graduated from Lawrence Institute of Technology in Detroit, Michigan, with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then worked for the next thirty years for Bell Telephone Laboratories in plant engineering taking an early retirement at the age of 59 as the Head of Design and Construction for Bell Labs.

In 1948, he married the love of his life, Helen Wolfe. They were married for 66 years, and had four children. During their marriage, Dick's career took them all over the world, including Michigan, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois and the Marshall Islands. Upon retirement, they continued to travel extensively, and spent their winters in Key Largo, Florida.

Dick was a tireless volunteer. He was an Eagle Scout and a Scout Leader for many years. After his retirement, he gave his time and expertise to building handicapped ramps throughout Monmouth County. He also volunteered at Community Medical Center pushing wheelchairs almost until his 92nd birthday. He was an active member of the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ.

Dick was the son of Edwin Newton and Blanche Prentice. His mother died when he was only two years old and the family moved in with his paternal grandparents. His beloved Grandma Sarah Bennett Newton was a guiding force in his life and he lovingly spoke of her often.

Dick was predeceased in 2014 by his wife Helen and he grieved for her every day. He was also predeceased by his son, Rick Newton. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Myra Wheeler and Wilma Russell and his brother William Newton. He is survived by his loving children, Elizabeth Newton of Clifton, NJ, Nancy Pilla and her husband Mark of Tabernacle, NJ, and Bob Newton and his wife Sue of Methuen, Massachusetts. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren Kim Newton, and her husband, Dan Desjeunes, Tom Newton and his wife Laura, Lauren Pilla, and Daniel Pilla and his wife Jenny Greenbaum. The lights of his last year were his great grandchildren Rose Greenbaum - Pilla and Dominic Desjeunes.

There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate his life at the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ, 40 Main Street, Holmdel, NJ 07733, on May 13th, at 3pm.
