AGE: 92 • Island Heights

Richard Wilmarth Power Sr., age 92, of Island Heights NJ passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 6, 1924. He lived in Gladwyne, PA before moving to Island Heights, NJ 35 years ago.

Mr. Power graduated from Saint Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia, PA and later received a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Power's time at college was interrupted by World War II. He served three years in the US Army 35th Engineer Battalion. His battalion fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the Rhine. After resuming his college education he graduated and worked in the textile industry in Philadelphia. He eventually started his own business, the Plymouth Yarn Company. Mr. Power spent his working life nurturing and growing that business which recently celebrated a 50 year anniversary.

Mr. Power was a life long member of Island Heights Yacht Club and spent happy decades on the Toms River sailing, boating, and racing sailboats. Above all else, Mr. Power was a gentleman. His humility and kindness were heaped upon family, friends and more. Mr. Power also lived his Catholic faith and always looked to help those in need.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Laura Lee. He is survived by one son, Richard Power Jr., and his wife, Jeanne, Toms River; two daughters, Sally Power, and her husband, Larry Woods, Bryn Mawr, PA, and Laurie Conlin and her husband, William, Devon, PA, and four loving grandchildren: William, Sarah, Carolyn, and Richard III. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, December 2 at St. Gertrude's Church,103 Central Ave., Island Heights, NJ.
