Robert C. Matthews

Monmouth Beach - Robert C. Matthews (Bobby), 72, died on February 21, 2018, down in his winter home of Hobe Sound, FL.

Bobby was born on June 26, 1945, in Long Branch, New Jersey to Robert and Alice Matthews. He attended Fair Haven Schools and graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven High School. After graduation, he proudly served in the US Army in the 18th Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, NC. When he returned to civilian life, Bobby found his passion within the family bus business. He worked for 37 years at Boro Bus Company and eventually became the owner of Holiday Travel and Jersey Shore Transportation. Bobby was an expert on maintaining and repairing buses, fire trucks, ambulances and anything with a diesel engine.

Bobby is survived by his wife and best friend Margaret (Peggy): his sons Robert and his wife Bridget, Michael and his wife Tracey, Christian, and his daughter Kelly. Bobby was a proud grandfather of six: Josh and his wife Kira, Robert, Rachel, Cullen, Ava and Oliver. He was also a great-grandfather of two: Jayden and Sophia. Also surviving are his sister Karen and her husband Curtis Smith, numerous nephews and nieces and their families. Bobby enjoyed his family, his friends, teasing all of the above, and his Dutch Masters cigars.

Bobby was a lifelong Monmouth County resident raising his family in Monmouth Beach, NJ. There was always a great chance of finding Bobby on either the Shrewsbury or Navesink Rivers in one his many boats. He enjoyed retirement at his winter home in Eaglewood Golf and Tennis Community in Hobe Sound, Florida. Bobby became an avid golfer and champion bocce player. He spent the last 8 years of his life living his dream. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
