AGE: 74 • Waretown, NJ

Robert (Bob) J. Doherty, 74, of Oceanaire/Greenbriar in Waretown, NJ, passed away suddenly on May 22, 2017. Bob touched so many lives with his infectious ability to make everyone laugh and love to be around him. He was born in Ridgefield Park, NJ and lived in River Edge, NJ for 35 years before moving to Waretown, NJ in 2014, where he enjoyed becoming a part of this tight knit adult community. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served honorably in various duty stations around the world for 4 years. He was a Police Officer with the Hackensack Police Dept. for 25 years before retiring in 1989 as a Lieutenant. He was a charter and founding member of the Hackensack Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #16 and a member of the NJ Police Honor Legion. Bob went on to his second career as an Insurance Fraud Investigator with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company where he retired from in 2012. Bob was a Past President of the Society of Investigators of Greater Newark and a member of the Marine Corps League, Cpl. William Smith Detachment in Bayville, NJ. In retirement, Bob enjoyed fishing with the Oceanaire/Greenbriar Hooks and Anchors Club and traveling the world with his loving Margaret.

Surviving is his devoted wife of 40 years, Margaret (Comer) Doherty; his loving son Michael Doherty and his wife Rebecca of Orinda, CA; his grandson Finn and granddaughters Molly and Keelin, who he loved so dearly, along with many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Shields and Elaine Warchalowski.

Family will receive friends on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 2-4 & 7-9pm at Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, 335 South Main St., Barnegat, NJ 08005. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, May 27 at 11:00am at St. Mary's RC Church, 747 West Bay Ave, Barnegat. Cremation was private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be in Bob's memory to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, 825 College Blvd, Suite 102, PMB 609, Oceanside, CA 92057.
