AGE: 91 •

Surrounded by his adoring family, Robert R. Gialanella, M.D., passed into eternal life on May 24, 2017 at his summer home in Allenhurst, NJ. He was 91 years old. Born in Newark, NJ in 1926 to John and Rosalie Gialanella, Bob was the youngest of nine brothers.

His life aspiration was to become a physician. After completing his undergraduate studies at Seton Hall University, he went on to pursue a Master's in psychology at New York University followed by Medical School in Rome, Italy. Upon returning to the U.S. Bob completed a GI fellowship at the Leahy Clinic in Boston and entered into private practice in Newark. He served multiple terms as medical staff president at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville and was loved by his patients and colleagues alike. Bob loved being a doctor, and was renowned as a fine gentleman who was a true, caring professional. He was also an avid golfer and handball player.

Bob and his beloved wife, Barbara lived in South Orange for 25 years and Essex Fells for 20 years before moving to Cedar Grove 12 years ago. He and his wife are longtime summer residents of Allenhurst, NJ.

Bob is survived by his most beloved wife, Barbara (nee Liccese); he is the loving father of Dr. Robert Gialanella and his wife Dr. Beth Brownell, Richard Gialanella, and Dr. Craig Gialanella and his wife Dr. Catherine Scarfi; and proud grandfather of Robert, Jessica and Massimo. He was predeceased by his 8 brothers.

Funeral is from the Galante Funeral Home, 54 Roseland Ave. Caldwell on Wednesday May 31 at 8:30 AM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, 89 Ridge St. Newark at 10 AM. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Chapel Mausoleum. Visitation is on Tuesday May 30 from 4-8 PM.
