AGE: 82 • Lakewood

Robert T Wheeler, 82 of Lakewood passed away December 8, 2016 at OMC surrounded by family.

He was born in Summit and raised in Maplewood, graduating from Columbia High School and attended The Cincinnati Conservatory of music. A world traveler with the group "Kids from Home, entertaining the troops playing the saxophone, before joining the Army, where he was in of the West Point Band. Then he worked as a photographer, traveling the country. Due to his passion for safe and defensive driving, left photography to become a driving instructor, teaching thousands to drive until his retirement in 2008. He moved to Howell in 1964 where he raised his family. He has lived in Lakewood for the past 20 years. Continuing his love of music, he was a self-taught recorder player, a member of several ensembles, a published composer and a church choir director for many years. He most recently was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Toms River.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Leslie (Norwood) Wheeler, 4 children: Darcy Stanley of Tinton Falls, Rod Wheeler of Little Egg Harbor, Samantha Santora of Lakewood and Jon Wheeler and his wife Andrea, 10 grandchildren, and one great grand daughter.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be on January 21, 2017, 1 pm, at the First United Methodist Church of Toms River, 129 Chestnut St., Toms River, NJ
