Robert V. Talty Obituary
Robert V. Talty

AGE: 90 • Wall

Robert V. Talty 90, of Wall, formerly of Colts Neck, passed away suddenly on Sunday, April 9, 2017 while visiting family in Lewes, Delaware. He was born in Jersey City, NJ, son of the late Dr. John C. Talty and Ada (Leddy) Talty. Best known to friends and family as Bob, he grew up in Hoboken and spent memorable summers in Spring Lake where he lifeguarded. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Dayton in the South Pacific. Following WWII, he attended Seton Hall University and graduated in 1950 with a B.A. in Business Administration. He was formerly a member of the New York Athletic Club, Deal Country Club, Spring Lake Country Club, and most recently the Manasquan River Golf Club.

Bob first began a distinguished career in the insurance industry with the Royal Insurance Company followed by the Hanover Insurance Company. While with the Hanover, he was viewed by many of his colleagues and employees as the consummate business leader-leading with drive but never losing his sense of humor. He believed that it was important to have fun at work. Bob cared deeply about the 1500 people and their families that he led; in turn, they would follow him anywhere. He retired as a Senior Vice President in 1993.

Bob's proudest achievement was that of being a loving and devoted husband and father. For 66 years, he and his "bride" Joan were inseparable and truly loved being with each other. They enjoyed traveling abroad and escaping the cold by visiting Naples, Vero Beach and Siesta Key. Bob loved to plan the trips and pack his bags.

He was a great role model and mentor to his children and grandchildren; teaching all to be honest, hardworking and willing to try something new. To his family, he was a bit of a renaissance man because he loved to pursue new interests and did so with vigor, such as running several 5K races, being an early adopter of technology, mastering gourmet cooking and much more.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joan (Seide), children Kathy Van Brunt (Harold) of Lewes, DE, Robert C. Talty (Kathie) of Lincroft, and Michele Twyman (Doug) of Sea Girt. He is also survived by six grandchildren, John C. Talty, Erin Twyman, Caitlin Talty, Dillon Twyman, Colin Twyman, William Talty; one great grandson, Jack Talty; and his loving dog Duffy. Bob is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Tony Stuart of Ft. Meyers, FL.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 18, from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, NJ. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, April 19, 10:30 AM at St. Catharine Church, 215 Essex Ave. Spring Lake, NJ. Committal will be private.
