Manchester - Robert Van Iderstine 97 of Leisure Knoll, Manchester died Friday, December 15, at home. Born in Newark, he lived in Glen Ridge and Bloomfield, before moving to Manchester in 1986. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard with the 3rd,5th, and 7th Central Pacific Fleets during World War II. He was Past Commander of the American Legion Post 20 and Post 448. He served as President for the United Way of Bloomfield, Vice President and Treasurer for the Boy Scouts of America, Tamarack Council, and Treasurer for the Bloomfield Public Library. He was Past President for the Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Mayor's Advisory Council, Bloomfield. While residing in Manchester, he belonged to the Leisure Knoll Organ Club, and served as Treasurer of the Leisure Knoll Fishing Club. He was employed for many years with Midlantic National Bank before retiring as Vice President. He is predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Helen Monahan Van Iderstine, who died in 2004, and a sister, Doris Myers. Surviving are 2 sons, Robert M. Van Iderstine of Grand Junction, CO, Peter G. Van Iderstine of Islamorada, FL, a sister, Mary Clare Petersen of Santa Monica, CA, 3 grandsons, Christopher, Todd, and Scott, and 2 great-grandchildren, Hali Grace and Asher. Visitation is Tuesday from 2-4 pm only at Oliverie Funeral Home, 2925 Ridgeway Road, Manchester with a funeral service being offered at 4:00 pm.
