Robert X. Kelleher Jr. 47, of Rumson, passed away Monday, July 20, 2009, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was born in Queens, N.Y. and grew up in Hauppauge, Long Island. He lived in Middletown for several years before moving to Rumson seven years ago. Robert was employed as a property adjuster for Chubb Insurance for 15 years. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. Bob was the active captain of the Rumson First Aid Squad, and served his community, friends and neighbors tirelessly. He was an avid tri-athlete most notably completing three Ironman competitions and 11 consecutive New York City marathons. He was a member of T.R.O.G lacrosse league in Rumson, and enjoyed spending his time coaching his son in football, soccer, baseball and lacrosse. Most important to him was spending time with his family and friends. Bob's kind spirit and generous nature will be truly missed by all who knew him. The sight of him running throughout Rumson will remain with us forever.
He was predeceased by his son, Thomas X. Kelleher; and his mother-in-law and father-in- law, Rose and Nick Roma. Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Denise Kelleher and his 10 year old son, Patrick of Rumson; his parents, Robert and Carol Kelleher; three sisters, Karen Hellman and her husband Christopher of Fair Haven, Jane McLoughlin and her husband Brendan of Red Bank, and Mary Chervet and her husband Alex of Pleasanton California; his sister-in-law, Linda Roma of Rumson; and his loving nieces and nephews, Katherine, Molly, Megan, and Emily Hellman, Jack, Christopher, and Allison Chervet, and Owen McLoughlin.
Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 23 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, July 24 at Holy Cross R.C. Church, Rumson. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Memorial donations may be made in Bob's name to Rumson First Aid Squad. Letters of condolence may be sent to the family through the funeral home's website at
