Roberta A. "Bobbie" Murtha Obituary
Roberta "Bobbie" A. Murtha

AGE: 84 • Brick

Roberta "Bobbie" A. Murtha, 84, of Brick passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Brandywine in Brick. The most important parts of her life were her friends and loved ones, with whom she made countless memories.

Most of all, Mrs. Murtha treasured the love of her life, Jack. They are no doubt thrilled to be together once again.

She loved taking friends and family out to large meals, often at the Windward Tavern or Il Boccone. She also enjoyed celebrating the Fourth of July in her son's backyard, where she sang "God Bless America," ate kielbasa and kept tabs on the Mets. Each March, she celebrated Saint Patrick's Day with family and friends with corned beef and live Irish music. An avid reader, she enjoyed the newspaper or a good mystery in her spare time.

Mrs. Murtha was a member of the Princeton Commons Ladies Club. She spent each Thursday with the girls, playing cards, sharing stories and planning charity events. She looked forward to going out to lunch with friends.

In her career, Mrs. Murtha shattered the glass ceiling. She retired in 1995 as the first woman vice president at The Record newspaper in Hackensack. She worked there for more than 30 years and headed the human resources department.

Born in New York City, she grew up in the Bronx and raised her family in New Milford. She moved to Brick's Princeton Commons community in 1996.

Mrs. Murtha was predeceased by her loving husband and soulmate, John "Jack" J. Murtha, in 2014; her parents, Albert and Alice Rieger; and her three sisters, Dorothy, Jean and Lorraine. Surviving are her son, Brian J. Murtha, and his wife, Marianne, of Brick; daughter, Linda Pluto, and her husband, Geoffrey, of Woodland, CA; four grandchildren, including Jaime Brown and her husband, Nathan, Jack Murtha and his wife, Lisa, Billy Murtha and his longtime girlfriend, Christy, and Julie Murtha; a great-grandson, Winston Brown; and a goddaughter, Kelley Hackett, and her husband, David.

Visiting will be on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 from 4-7pm at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Rd., Brick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 10am at St. Dominic's RC Church, Brick. Entombment will follow at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River. Donations may be made in her name to the St. Jude Children's Research Foundation. For more information please visit www.obrienfuneral home.com
