Ronald J. Portz, 78, of Barnegat, NJ, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Portz, passed peacefully on Sunday, November 5, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his wife, Christine (Chris); his children: Ronald Portz Jr., Jennifer (David) Perna, Maria (Thomas) Madden, Brenda (Michael Sr.) Clark, James (Kathy) Jensen, Michael (Barbara) Portz, Michelle (Jason) Sanders; 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Portz; sister, Eloise Toth; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Ronald graduated from Perth Amboy High School in 1956. He enlisted in the United States Navy that year and was honorably discharged in 1959 as a Second Class Petty Officer. He worked as an engineer for EAI (Electronics Associates, Inc.) where he was involved in controlling space travel of astronauts for the Mercury and Gemini flights and led a team of engineers controlling five nuclear powerplant instruction stations. He later worked for AT&T and Comverse, improving telecommunications systems worldwide, until he retired in 2008.

Ronald was an active and dedicated member of his community, volunteering as an EMT of the Barnegat First Aid Squad from 2008-2017, as a soccer referee for 20 years and at Keswick, a Christian drug rehabilitation facility, for three years. He ran in and finished nine marathons, including the New York City Marathon and the Marine Corps. Marathon. He was also an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and a devoted congregant of Bayside Chapel in Barnegat, where he served in the ministry to church groups and the local community.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 1pm on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at the Bayside Chapel, 965 West Bay Avenue, Barnegat NJ 08005.
