Ruth Schiff Obituary
Ruth Schiff

AGE: 104 •

Ruth Schiff, 104, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. Until the end Ruth remained mentally and physically vital and active, truly a joy to be with.

Ruth was born in Newark in 1913, the youngest of three children of Israel and Rose Gershowitz. Ruth graduated from Central High school, having taken what was then called a business program, and used these skills throughout her life. Ruth worked first with her father and then, after she married Benjamin Schiff in 1937, they worked together in their dry-cleaning businesses in Newark, first on Washington and Court Street, and then on Clinton Avenue. They had three sons, Howard, Leonard and Daniel. After living the first part of her life in the Newark area, Ruth divided her nearly forty retirement years between New Jersey and Florida, last residing in Shrewsbury, New Jersey.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Benjamin Schiff, and her beloved sons, Leonard Jay Schiff and Howard Philip Schiff. She is survived by her son, Daniel Carl Schiff, and daughter-in-law, Janet Ellis Schiff. She was the beloved "GG Ruthie" to her grandchildren Shoshana Schiff and Warren Usatine; Max Leib Schiff; Hadassah Wilmere Schiff Zamir and Assaf Zamir; Sonya Elke Schiff Linton and Kit Linton; and her great grandchildren, Michael Benjamin Usatine, Viola Mae Linton, Rachel Marissa Usatine (her namesake), Henry Calvin Linton, Shawn Zamir, Noah Avon Disney Schiff, and Mia Hope Zamir. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews, including Philip Gerson, Paula Niese and Elaine and Chet Lawrence. Among her many, many friends Ruth leaves behind Edith Moses and her caretaker and loving companion Jane Del Mundo.

Beyond her intelligence, skills, and steady habits, Ruth was, for 104 years, a person others could always value and rely upon; friendly, honest, always looking for the good qualities of all she knew. Ruth enjoyed her life; and those people who were fortunate enough to know and share their lives with her were far better for it. May Ruth rest in peace as her just reward for a life well lived.

The funeral service will be held graveside at 2:00 PM on October 26, 2017 at King Solomon Cemetery, Clifton, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the . Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean, are in charge of arrangements.
