Samuel Sciarretta

AGE: 103 • Keansburg

Samuel Sciarretta, 103, of Keansburg, passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Bayside Manor Assisted Living, Keansburg, N.J. He was born in Montesilvano (Abruzzo), Italy and came to America at age eleven, settling with his family in Brooklyn, New York. On July 15, 1933, he married a beautiful lady, Mary Rocano and they raised three children. An active young man, Sam debuted at Madison Square Garden as a boxer, did long distance cycling, and excelled in softball as a pitcher for The Maccabees All Stars of Borough Park. Professionally, Sam owned a bike shop, did roofing jobs, and worked as a car inspector for the New York City Transit until his retirement in 1968. He then continued working part-time as a messenger for Manufacturers Hanover Trust in Manhattan. Sam and his lovely wife moved to Staten Island in 1971 where they enjoyed many happy years with their children and grandchildren. His favorite hobby was building and repairing bicycles. He also had a passion for traveling, taking many trips to Italy with his family (he made his last trip at age 101), as well as visiting Switzerland, The Holy Land, and Argentina to reunite with brother, Fiore. Sam and Mary also loved traveling to Las Vegas and California to visit his other brother, Vincent, in Monterey. He was featured in the documentary, "They Came to America" and also played a big role in the short film "Two Boroughs." Sam was an extremely charitable man and had an enormous amount of faith. He was "One-of-a-Kind."

Surviving are his three children, son, Gerard Sciarretta and wife Pauline of Brick, daughter, Elizabeth DeSimone and husband Vincent of Neptune, and daughter, Lucille Sisti and husband John of Fort Mill, S.C. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Diane, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Maria, John Michael and wife Laura, and Christopher and wife Lindsay, and ten great-grandchildren, two nieces, Marian Sciarretta and Annette Johnston, and many great-nieces and nephews.

Visiting will be Sunday 2-8 PM at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 AM at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Neptune, N.J. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, NY.
