Shawn Thomas McKenna Obituary
Shawn Thomas McKenna

Belmar - Shawn Thomas McKenna passed away unexpectedly and much too soon on Monday, March 19 at home in Belmar, New Jersey. Shawn was born on March 29, 1955 in Wilmington, Delaware to Robert L. and Patricia A. (Begley) McKenna. He grew up in Delaware; Ellicott City, MD; Wading River, NY; and Matawan, NJ. After graduating from high school, Shawn attended the State University College at Oneonta in NY, where he earned a bachelor's degree in geology in 1978. He then went on to do graduate work in geology at Washington State University before returning home to NJ, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life, and where he married Jenny Lu Trocchio on October 7, 2007.

Shawn's memory will forever be cherished by family and friends, especially for the passion he showed both for the family and for his many intellectual and recreational interests. On the serious side, Shawn was an avid Civil War buff who could recount in great detail the charges, retreats, and counter-charges of many a battle between the blue and the grey. He also did extensive genealogical research on the McKenna family, including visits to a number of ancestral graves, gleaning information and insights that he gladly shared with other family members. Shawn was also a lover of lighthouses, valuing their technology and historical significance as well as their aesthetic appeal. In all, he made over 400 trips to lighthouses throughout the U.S. and Canada, including participating for 18 years in the Lighthouse Challenge of NJ. On the lighter side, no one loved roller coasters more than Shawn, a child-like passion that he indulged during numerous vacations to Disney World. And as everyone in the family knows, Shawn was also a master baker who was famous for the many delectable desserts he created for countless parties and holidays throughout the years.

Shawn is survived by his beloved wife Jenny Lu Trocchio (Belmar, NJ); parents Robert and Patricia McKenna (Frederica, DE); siblings Michael (Mary D. "Susie" Webster, Oneonta, NY), Kathleen McKenna (Richard J. Cerretani, Wall, NJ), Patricia Bradshaw (Christopher, Analomink, PA), Robert F. (Anne Downey, Eliot, ME), and Daniel (Cathy Carroll, Matawan, NJ); and numerous nieces and nephews to whom Shawn was especially loving and giving.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Shawn's memory may be made to either the New Jersey Lighthouse Society or the Lighthouse Preservation Society.

Friends and family are invited to the viewing from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, March 26, 2018 at the Ely Funeral Home, Neptune. Condolences may also be offered online at www.elyfuneralhome.com.
