AGE: 69 • Whiting

The Reverend Shelley Katherine Potter-Abrahamsen, 69, of Whiting, Manchester Twp., NJ passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 following a brief illness. She was born in Westerly, RI to George and Gretta (Ehret) Potter (both deceased). The family lived in Alfred, NY from 1949 until moving to Mystic, CT when she was 12.

Following high school, Shelley graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Eventually she moved across the river to South Jersey and worked in various hospitals over the years. She was a long-term volunteer with Magnolia Ambulance Corps and also an active member of Magnolia United Methodist Church. Through her participation there and following a pilgrimage to Israel in 1987, she felt called to become a pastor.

While raising a family of four and continuing her ambulance corps and church activities, Shelley went to college part-time from 1987 until she completed her Bachelor of Arts in 1999 at Thomas A. Edison State College. After that she attended Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and graduated with a Master of Divinity.

Following ordination, Shelley was appointed pastor of The Church of the Master United Methodist Church in Howell, NJ where she served for 8 years. She was next appointed to Hamilton United Methodist Church in Neptune, NJ and served there for 4 years. In June of 2015, Shelley retired and moved to Whiting with Arthur Abrahamsen, her beloved husband of 38 years.

Shelley is survived by Arthur, 4 children and their spouses: Michael and Elissa (Sasian) Abrahamsen of Stroudsburg, PA, Richard and Delia (Flaherty) Abrahamsen of Newtown, PA, Lisa Dawn Abrahamsen of Sicklerville, NJ and Jonathan and Patricia (Lynch) Quinet of Philadelphia, PA. 6 grandchildren: Rhianna Pennie and Rhiannon, Dalton, Cullen, Avianna and Gianni Abrahamsen. 2 Siblings: Mark Potter with wife, Lin of London, England and Molly Notkin with husband, Rick of Gilford, NH.
