AGE: 87 • Oakhurst

Shirley Mathilda Thorpe (nee Lundy), 87, of Oakhurst, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Shirley, a lifelong resident of New Jersey was born in Newark on April 21, 1929. She lived in Rahway as a girl; then moved to Asbury Park, where she graduated in 1946 from Asbury Park High School. Shirley met a handsome paratrooper, Erb James Thorpe, fell in love, and married him on November 23, 1950. They moved to Oakhurst, where they raised four beautiful daughters. She worked as a legal secretary for many years and retired from the law office of Francis X. Moore in Red Bank. She loved reading, sewing, traveling and especially enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. She was a member of Ballard United Methodist Church in Asbury Park, and General Society of Mayflower Descendants. Shirley also was a Commissioned Honorable Kentucky Colonel and a Duchess of Hazard, commissioned an Honorary Citizen of the City of Hazard, KY. Shirley was predeceased by her parents Eli Bennett and Helen Pauline Lundy (nee Horton); brother-in-law James W. McLain; and son-in-law Theodore Heleotis. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Erb James Thorpe; her daughters Deborah Cook and husband Marvin L. of Neptune; Diane Heleotis of Neptune; Denise Cole and husband Thomas of Freehold and Darlene Larkin and husband Peter of Freehold; 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren (with one on the way); and sisters Lois McLain of Interlaken and Lynn Brocker, and husband Dale of Neptune; along with many other loving relatives and devoted friends. A memorial service will be held at Ballard United Methodist Church, 1515 Fourth Ave, Asbury Park, NJ 07712 at 1 PM, Sunday April 23, 2017. Interment will be private at the William C. Brigadier General Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. Donations in her memory may be made to Ballard United Methodist Church.
