AGE: 90 • Toms River, NJ

Steve Oravetz, 90, of Toms River, NJ died on Thursday August 31, 2017 at his home after an almost ten-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Steve was born in Irvington, NJ on January 10, 1927 to Stephen and Anna Oravetz. He lived in Hillside, Hampton and Jersey City, NJ until moving to Toms River, NJ in 1986.

A World War II veteran, Steve was a seaman in the Navy from 1945 to 1946. He was employed by Western Electric/Bell Labs/AT&T for over 30 years and held several different positions during his tenure there, including supervisor of the cable shop, travel manager and supervisor of motor vehicles. During this time he worked his way through night school at Rutgers University College and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Steve was also a lifetime member of the Pioneers.

Steve was a man of many interests and abilities. After leaving the Navy, Steve played minor league football for the American Football League. He also had a pilot's license and gave flying lessons at Morristown Airport during the 1950s and 1960s. Steve was a parishioner at Faith Lutheran Church in Lavallette, NJ for over 30 years. He served on the Church Council for many years in various capacities, including both treasurer and property manager. Steve was also a member of the Fish Hawk's Saltwater Anglers Club's in Forked River, NJ. He was an avid photographer and stained-glass lamp maker and regularly shared his talents with his friends and family.

Caring, easy-going, funny and dependable husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, he is predeceased by his beloved wife for over 60 years, Faye, his brother, Arthur Oravetz, and his granddaughter, Courtney Fricchione. Steve is survived by his daughter, Lynda Fricchione, his granddaughters, Cheryl Fricchione and Justine Fricchione, his buddy, Frank Martinez, his "handyman", Dan Anderson, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family respectfully invites relatives and friends for the viewing on Monday September 4, 2017 from 2-4pm & 7-9pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Boulevard, Toms River, NJ. A Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday September 5, 2017 at 10am at Faith Lutheran Church, Lavallette, NJ. Burial will follow at Hollywood Memorial Cemetery, Union, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steve's memory to Faith Lutheran Church, 1801 Grand Central Avenue, Lavallette, NJ 08735.
