AGE: 98 • Toms River

Thomas J. Gross, 98, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 25, 2017. He was born in Jersey City on October 2, 1918, and lived in Jersey City and Belleville before moving to Toms River in 1981. Thomas graduated from Lincoln High School in Jersey City in 1936 where he was active on the swim team. He worked for Western Electric in Kearny for 43 years, retiring in 1981.

Thomas was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Anna Gross, and his siblings Catherine, Harry, Marie, and his twin brother William. He was married to the love of his life, Eleanor, for 71 years before she passed away in 2012.

He is survived by his loving children, Eric T. Gross and his wife Barbara Lynn Gross of Shark River Hills, his daughter Lois E. Gross and son-in-law Nicholas Morales, Jr. of Toms River. Thomas also leaves behind his granddaughter, Irene White and her husband Chris of Wall Township; his grandson Matthew Morales, and his partner Jeanne Mitev of Neptune along with his great-granddaughter Amelia Claire Morales; his grandson Andrew Morales of Seattle, Washington; and his granddaughter Rachel Morales of Tzfat, Israel He also leaves behind his constant companion, his little dog Cody.

Thomas was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. When living in Jersey City, he was also active in Our Savior Lutheran Church where he served as sexton and church council treasurer. After moving to Toms River, he was a member of the Silver Ridge Park West Men's Club. In his church, Redeemer Lutheran of Neptune, he was a member the weekly Bible study, "Something Special".

Tom was a hard worker who was always busy doing something. When he wasn't working at his job, he always had a project going on at home - either inside or outside. His hobbies were music, gardening, and home maintenance. He was a great provider for his family and loved to keep busy. Tom was also a man with a strong faith and, in recent years, looked forward to once again being with his beloved wife, Eleanor, and the rest of his family.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, March 2, 2017, at the Ely Funeral Home, Neptune, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017, at 11 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Neptune. Interment to follow at Ocean County Memorial Park in Toms River.
