AGE: 93 • Metuchen

Dr. Vincent J. Cannamela, 93, of Ocean Township, formerly of Metuchen, died May 28, 2017 at Jersey Shore Medical Center. Born August 15, 1923 in Perth Amboy, Vincent graduated from Perth Amboy High School and The Ohio State University prior to serving in the United States Navy Hospital Corps from 1944-1946. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1950 and was appointed a First Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps that same year. He interned at St. Michael's Hospital in Newark and did his residency at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. He also served as chief resident at Fitkin-Morgan Memorial Hospital (now Jersey Shore Medical Center) prior to opening an internal medicine practice in Metuchen in 1954. That same year he married Camille Miceli and they celebrated their 55th anniversary just prior to her death in 2009.

Vincent served as company physician for Chevron Oil Co. in Perth Amboy. He was a member of the New Jersey Medical Society and received the Golden Merit Award in 2004 in recognition of 50 years as a practicing physician. A member of the American Medical Association, he was attending physician at Perth Amboy General Hospital and then at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison where he was chairman of the Credentials Committee.

For over 50 years, Vincent was an active parishioner of St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. A long-time member of the Metuchen Rotary Club, he was the Club's President 1980-81 and later was named a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his service. For over 60 years, he was a member of the Allenhurst Beach Club. He also belonged to the Rolling Meadows Men's Club and the Ocean Township Italian American Club. Vincent enjoyed music, reading, fishing, playing bocce and bridge, and was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Mets and Jets. He also loved to travel - especially to Italy.

He was predeceased by his father Vincent, his mother Clara, his sister Beatrice Enevold and his beloved wife Camille. He is survived by four children and their spouses: Carol Ann McLaughlin and her husband Mark of Allenhurst, Laura Cannamela and her husband Jim Costello of Valatie, NY, Mary Claire Nicholson and her husband Brian of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and Vincent Cannamela and his wife Noreen of Wethersfield, CT; twelve grandchildren: Dr. Mary Ann Yehl and her husband Roger, Maureen Bogardus and her husband Evan, Michael McLaughlin and his wife Jenna, Willie Costello and his wife Jessica Wright, Anna Costello, Dr. Kaitlin Nicholson, Meagan, Christopher and John Nicholson, and Vinnie, Catherine and Julia Cannamela; six great-children: Katherine, Christopher, Elizabeth and Caroline Yehl, and William and Camille Bogardus.

Visitation will be on Sunday June 4th from 3-7pm at Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Avenue, Asbury Park. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday June 5th at 10:00am at St. Anselm's Church, 1028 Wayside Road, Tinton Falls, NJ. Interment will be at St. James Cemetery, Woodbridge.
