AGE: 95 • Toms River

Judge William Howard Huber, age 95, of Toms River, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 19, 2017. Born in Bridgeton, New Jersey, he was a graduate of Highland Park High School and received his Bachelor's Degree from Rutgers University (Class of '44). He then joined the US Army and served as a Second Lieutenant and was promoted to Captain before he was discharged. During World War II he served in France and Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Heroic Achievement.

After the war, he graduated from Harvard Law School and began his legal career in Ship Bottom. He married Elizabeth Rowland from New Brunswick and together they raised their seven children in Toms River. He served as a prosecutor in Ocean County and was Past President of the Ocean County Bar Association. In 1966, he was appointed as a county judge and then promoted to Superior Court in 1977. He presided a total of 32 years as Ocean County's longest-serving judge involved in civil, criminal, family and probate matters. In 1999, he was honored as Ocean County's Irishman of the Year by the Emerald Society.

Predeceased by his wife Elizabeth (Betty), son Michael, brother George Huber, sister Mary Gumerlock and son-in-law Lou Guazzelli, he is lovingly survived by his brother David Huber and wife Virginia (Madison, WI), his sister-in-law Grace Huber (Westminster, MD), his sister-in-law Grace O'Hare (Monroe Township NJ), his son John and wife Carol (Dayton, OH), daughter Pat (Bradenton, FL), daughter-in-law Deborah (Haddonfield, NJ), daughter Mary Lou (Reston, VA), daughter Martha and husband Dean (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), daughter Caroline and husband Randy (Little Silver, NJ) and son Tom and wife Christine (Pittsburgh, PA). He has fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was a weekly visitor to the Ocean County Library and a long-standing member of St. Joseph's Parish, the Toms River Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus. He served as President of the Toms River Chamber of Commerce and the Toms River Kiwanis Club. He participated in the Men's Retreat Program held at the Loyola Jesuit Center, Morristown, for fifty years. Bill will be missed for his sense of humor, his strong sense of fairness and justice, and his love for his faith and family.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 31st at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's RC Church, 685 Hooper Ave., Toms River. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Toms River.
