AGE: 92 • Silver Ridge Park North, Berkeley Twp.

William James Roberts, age 92, of Silver Ridge Park North, Berkeley Twp., NJ passed away at home surrounded by his family on January 28, 2017.

He was born to William and Hazel (Cliff) Roberts on June 16, 1924 in Carbondale, PA. Bill joined the Navy at 17 and served on The USS Emmons, seeing action in Europe and the Pacific. His ship was involved in the landing at Normandy and was sunk by Japanese fighter planes off the Island of Okinawa in 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars for bravery.

He married Helen Novitsky and they remained inseparable until her death in 2010. They resided in Dover, NJ and Hazlet, NJ until moving to Silver Ridge ten years ago.

Bill graduated from Newark College of Engineering (NJIT) and worked as a Civil Engineer for the Weyerhaeuser Co., The Cyanamid Co. and at Fort Monmouth.

He was predeceased by his parents William and Hazel, by a son William James Roberts III, his two brothers Francis and Frederick and a sister Elizabeth.

Left to mourn his passing are four daughters, Yvonne Roberts of Toms River, Mary Ellen Clifford and her husband Terrence of Piscataway, NJ, Diane Holzschuh and her husband Wade of Marlton, NJ, and Nancy Neveroski and her husband Jim of Toms River. His loving grandchildren David Mooney, Lt. Ryan Mooney and his wife Fernanda, Maureen Clifford, William Clifford and his wife Toni, Christopher Holzschuh, Evan Holzschuh, Amanda Neveroski and great granddaughters Aurora and Emilie, with another baby girl due in June.

Bill also leaves his sister in law Marie. He was very fond of all of his nieces and nephews.

Bill was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and an exceptional man who will be greatly missed.

The family is grateful for the wonderful care he received at Community Hospital, the VNA Hospice service and the Karing with Kindness assistants.

Follow his wishes, the services will be private and held in Pennsylvania.
