William Norman Berson

- - William Norman Berson (91) died on January 23, 2018, peacefully in his home in Toms River. Born in 1927 in Point Pleasant Hospital, Norman was raised in Lavallette and attended its two-room schoolhouse, followed by Upper Darby High School, from which he was graduated at age 16. Norman entered the University of Pennsylvania at age 17 and matriculated until his 18th birthday, when he enlisted in the Navy, serving as an aviator radioman and gunner as well as a water survival instructor. He returned to Penn and was graduated in 1949, the first in his family to earn a college degree.

Norman spent 60 years as an insurance broker and agency executive, first at Connecticut General in Hartford, Cleveland and New York City, later with Insurance of North America, New Jersey's largest insurance brokerage firm.

While attending graduate courses, he met and married Lora June Rucker of Mount Vernon, Illinois. They celebrated over 50 years together, and raised three sons. After June's death in 2008, Norman remained a widower.

Although his profession took him far afield, Norman always retained Shore roots, first retiring to Lavallette, and later to Island Heights and Toms River. Norman and June were members of the Island Heights United Methodist Church, Lavallette Yacht Club, Island Heights Yacht Club, Toms River Yacht Club, and Toms River Country Club. Norman was a Past Commodore of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) and served on the Island Heights Planning Board.

Norman is survived by his three sons: Mark Rucker Berson and his spouse, Shauna; Steven Lee Berson and his spouse, Marijke; William Norman Berson II; and two grandchildren, Erin Rhea Berson Byrnes and her spouse, Daniel Byrnes; and Luke William Berson and his spouse, Caroline Calhoun Berson.

A memorial service will be held in early summer celebrating the life of Norman and June. Donations may be made in Norman and June's name to Ocean County Hunger Relief, 21 Germania Station Road, Toms River, N.J. 08755.
