William Paul Burke Obituary
William Paul Burke

AGE: 88 • Sea Girt

William "Bill Burke" "Bill" "Poppy" "Burkie" passed away, peacefully, in a room filled with love at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch (after watching one final Yankees win). He lived in South Orange, Short Hills, and Sea Girt. He attended Columbia High School of Maplewood where he pitched the Greater Newark Tournament of 1947 and graduated from Carteret Prep.

He also pitched for the U.S. Marines and the New York Yankees AAA team. Bill was the owner of Burke Heating Systems, Sparta, NJ and retired to Sea Girt in 1980.

Bill was a scratch golfer and member of many golf clubs including Canoe Brook, Baltustrol, and Spring Lake. He loved golfing with his buddies.

In 1991, Bill became wheelchair bound due to Multiple Sclerosis. You could find "BURKY" every morning at the Sea Girt board walk (the Pavilion in the winter and Philadelphia in the Summer) with his special boardwalk buddies smoking a cigar, scootering with his beloved aide Saulius to the Sea Girt Firehouse for Monday dinner's, attending parties, reading every book at the Sea Girt Library and watching golf, the Yankees and the NY Giants. Bill loved living close to the beach and referred to Sea Girt as "Utopia".

His favorite thing was to be with his family who all lived within 10 minutes of each other, attending his grandchildren's countless lacrosse, soccer, and softball games family dinners, birthdays and holidays at his daughter's houses, watching college graduations on the iPad, enjoying a cold (mini) Budweiser or a Beefeater on the rocks, a nice cigar and a homemade dinner from Cathy.

He is survived by Cathy (Schneider) his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, who gave him endless love and care. His daughters, Kate Duerr (Charlie), Tricia Levin (Rob) and Liz Steppe; grandchildren Billy and Tommy Duerr, Quinn and Packy Levin and Mikey and Casey Steppe; and sister Eileen Burke, New York City. Predeceased by his brothers Jack and Joe, parents Elinor and William Burke. Special thanks to his caregivers, Saulius and Sarna, who gave him such loving care.

A mass in Bill's honor will be held at St. Marks Church in Sea Girt at 9:30, Saturday, August 19th . A memorial donation may be made to the Sea Girt Library, Sea Girt Fire House, Sea Girt Police or the Manasquan First Aid.
