AGE: 78 • Lakewood

William Russell Herder's soul entered into eternal life on February 28th at the age of 78.

He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Maria and his sister Barbara A. Poole; and is survived by his second wife Joan Theresa; by his three children Karen L. Schreiber of Mason Neck, VA; Donna M. York of Maple Shade, NJ, and son William R. Herder of Alexandria, VA; and by his three step-sons Joseph M. Schaf of Mount Laurel, NJ, Michael W. Schaf of Arvada, CO and David A. Schaf of Asbury Park, NJ. William is also survived by three grandsons, two step-grandsons, two great-granddaughters, and one great-grandson; by his sister Virginia L. Jones of Oak Harbor, WA; by a special niece Joolee McGarry of San Francisco, CA and by many wonderful and thoughtful neighbors and dear friends.

He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1956 and after eight years of enlisted service he earned a commission as a Marine Corps officer. While on active duty, he earned academic degrees in physics, mathematics, and electrical engineering. He served at the major Marine Corps camps in the United States and on Okinawa; and served a tour in Vietnam. He retired in 1978 as a Major of Marines after 22 years of active service. Retiring to New Jersey, he continued to support Department of Defense and U. S. Army at Fort Monmouth as a DOD contractor associated primarily with information systems development. After that retirement, he volunteered his services to the Leisure Village East Association, acting as the Chairman of the Budget Committee. In addition, he worked as an Administrative Assistant for the Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea, Point Pleasant NJ

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Silverton Memorial Funeral Home. Visiting hours will be on March 11th from 2 PM until the service at 4:00PM. Cremation will be private.
