Kenneth F.X. Albers

AGE: 86 • Spring Lake Heights

Kenneth F.X. Albers, 86, of Spring Lake Heights, passed away at his residence on Monday, March 3, 2014. Mr. Albers was born and raised in Jersey City. In later years, he lived in Rutherford and Glen Ridge, before retiring to Fairway Mews, Spring Lake Heights, in 1993. He was a graduate of Regis High School and St. Peter's College, and completed studies at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. In 1949, while a college student, Mr. Albers worked nights at First Jersey National Bank, Jersey City. This was the beginning of a long, successful and well-respected career in banking. After graduation, he stayed on at First Jersey, earning numerous promotions, until leaving as Vice-President in 1966, for a position at Provident Savings Bank. In 1968, he was named President and CEO of Provident, and in 1983 he was named Chairman of the Board and CEO. He retired as CEO in 1993, and retired as Chairman of the Board in 1998. He held numerous posts in professional organizations, including a term as President of the National Association of Savings Banks. Mr. Albers enjoyed mentoring young bank employees, and assisted many in furthering their education and careers. Many went on to successful careers, and regularly acknowledged the mentorship of Mr. Albers.

After retiring, Mr. Albers started "Hudson South" - the Hudson South Haute Cuisine Discussion and Glee Club, a group of retired businessmen from Hudson County living in the Shore area, who meet regularly for lunch and other activities. He also enjoyed reading, music, and explaining the proper use of adverbs. He was a huge NY Giants fan, having been a season ticketholder since 1963. But his enthusiasm for sports was best displayed when his children were young, and he never missed one of their ballgames.

Mr. Albers was predeceased by his parents, John George and Mary Catherine (Kane) Albers. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Molly (Colbert), in 1984, as well as by his brothers, Joseph, and Dr. William R. Albers. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne (Schaefer). He is also survived by his children and their spouses, Maureen and Jim Lampariello of Nutley, Michael and Hermie Albers of Reno, NV, Kenneth F.X. Albers, Jr. and Andrea Albers of Westwood, and Kevin and Dawn Albers of Bayonne, as well as 9 grandchildren. He was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild. Mr. Albers is also survived by Yvonne's daughter, Carol Gerard, and many other relatives and friends, and was also predeceased by Yvonne's children, Yvonne, William, and Joan Gerard. The Albers family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care provided to Mr. Albers by Dr. Patricia Young, M.D.
