Martin McCue Obituary

Martin C. McCue

AGE: 90 • Red Bank

A Red Bank resident for 50 years, Martin C. McCue died in peace surrounded by family on July 28. Born and raised in Long Branch, he was the son of the late Thomas E. and Grace (Manion) McCue. He was 90. Martin ("Marty") graduated from Long Branch High School and went on to earn an accounting degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1944. He served two years overseas in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a lieutenant salvage officer in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. After the war, Marty returned to Long Branch to work for McCue's Dairy, founded by his grandfather in 1897. He served as its president until the business merged with Shore Dairies in 1962. Marty subsequently joined Shore Dairies and then Wardell's Dairy. In 1975, he was appointed Red Bank Borough Clerk, a post he held for four years. He then joined the Garden State Parkway, where he worked for 20 years retiring in 1999. Marty was named Garden State Parkway Ambassador of the Year in 1996. Marty was a long-time communicant of Star of the Sea Church in Long Branch, and later joined St. James Catholic Church in Red Bank. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, he was a Grand Knight of Long Branch Knights of Columbus Council 335, of which he was a member for 70 years. He was also a long-time member of the KOC Choir at Star of the Sea Church. Marty was a member of the Holy Name Society, Third Order of St. Francis, Catholic War Veterans, The Old Guard of Long Branch, and was a volunteer firefighter for the West End Engine Company, and the Red Bank Navesink Hook and Ladder Fire Company. He completed post-graduate work at Monmouth College, Brookdale Community College and Penn State.

For 65 years, he was a loving husband to Theresa (Fuga) McCue, and was the devoted father of six children. Surviving him are Peggy Correa of Fair Haven; Martin T. McCue of Pittsford, NY and his wife, Kathy; Nancy McCue and her husband Rick Theriault of Downingtown, PA; Paul McCue of Freehold and his wife, Charlene; and Christine McCue Potts of Medfield, MA, and her husband, Jerry Potts. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joan McCue, and son-in-law, Drew Correa. Marty is also survived by his brother, Thomas E. McCue, Jr., and sisters Mrs. Eleanor Hayes, Mrs. Elizabeth Paschetto, Mrs. Sally Wichman, and Miss Teresa McCue. He was devoted to his 11 grandchildren Joe and Anne Correa; Adam and Erin McCue; Katie and Christopher Theriault; Matthew and Rebekah McCue; and Ryan, Sean and Alana Potts.

Marty was an eternal tinkerer; he went out of his way to do a good deed - especially visiting the sick; he could be counted on to add a witty comment to any conversation; and he always had a balanced checkbook, especially after a particularly good night of poker.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, at Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 1, at St. James Catholic Church in Red Bank, followed by interment at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, West Long Branch. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Visiting Nurse Association Health Group hospice program or St. James Catholic Church, Red Bank.

Uncle Marty,
May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.
With love,

Marty, you are and always will be my favorite cousin! When God made you, he broke the mould. And why not? A better model cold not be made :) You always made me smile; you were always there to lend a hand, to offer advice, to point me in the right direction, to put things in their proper perspective. Yours was a life well lived, and you leave behind a legacy of love and devotion, and beautiful memories as well.
