AGE: 77 • Toms River

Nancy S. Thorne, 77, died on December 15, 2013 as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident near her home in Toms River, NJ. Nancy was the consummate musician. She graduated with honors from Penn State University in 1958 and is a life member of the alumni association. She earned a Masters degree in Fine Arts from Rutgers University and taught music in public schools from 1958-1998 serving the communities of Chatham, East Brunswick and South Plainfield. In 1981, Nancy received the NJ Master Teacher Award from the NJMEA and Governors' recognition as Master Teacher of Music. As a board member of many professional organizations and the founder and President of the Central Jersey Orff-Schulwerk Association, she worked tirelessly to enhance music education in NJ schools.Nancy was an exceptional pianist, organist and renowned chorister performing within in NJ public schools for over 40 years and Latter-day Saint congregations from Washington DC to NYC. Her performances ranged from grade school auditoriums to Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and LDS Temple dedications.

Nancy raised her family in Metuchen, NJ from 1968-2003, but upon retiring, moved to the Toms River Area where she has been conducting the SouthWind chorus in the Holiday City South community and the chorus of the Lakewood Maennerchor. Nancy was also an angel of service providing a shoulder to cry on, a ride to the doctors or an empathetic ear. She will be missed greatly and remembered fondly by all with whom she shared her love affair with music and her love to serve God.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Peter F. Thorne; Sons, Rick (Lorri) and Chris (Christine); 5 beloved Grandchildren, David, Arli (Jake), Danielle, Taylor and Brianne; one perfect Great-Granddaughter, Avery; and her brother, Frank Siftar (Elaine).

Services is at 11 AM Saturday, December 28th at St. John's Windish Ev. Lutheran Church, 617 E. 4th St., Bethlehem, PA. Calling hours will take place from 10-11 AM in the church. Interment will follow at the Fountain Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, Allentown. In lieu of flowers we ask for donations be made to the Nancy S. Thorne Memorial Trust, 2751 Meadow Lake Dr., Toms River, NJ 08755, where funds will provide scholarship(s) for Choral Education, and donations to the Fountain Hill Cemetery, where she and her husband served as board members.
