Douglas Cavanaugh Obituary
Douglas Cavanaugh

Red Bank

Douglas Cavanaugh passed to God on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015. He was born in Red Bank, son of the late Edward and Winifred Gandorf Cavanaugh. Douglas had only one sibling, an elder brother, Edward Jr. who was severely handicapped.

Doug had two aunts, the late Kate Gandorf Lamberson and Jane Gandorf Cavanaugh (no relation to Doug's father).

Doug attended St. James grade school and Red Bank Catholic High '53. He was a graduate of Monmouth College and Seton Hall University. He was a communicant of St. James R.C. Church. He was a public school teacher in Union Beach, then an elementary grade teacher in Middletown Twp. Schools from which he retired. He was outgoing and loved to make friends. He liked to travel, first in NJ then visiting all countries. He loved Florida and Ireland.

Doug was a talented, self-taught artist who focused mainly in pastel portraits. He liked to surprise the subjects from photos. He loved animals and pet portraits. He lived in Rumson for a time, returning to Red Bank. He used his art talent and light carpentry skills to restore a "Lincoln Era" house on Linden Place and that became his final residence. For this, he received many compliments, "looks like Ocean Grove or Cape May".

He is survived by his lifelong brother and friend from early school days, Jack Connor of Fair Haven and beloved cat "Beau, Bo-Bo" and cousins, Coleen Burnett of Wall and Kathleen McGuire Mahony of CO. Also surviving are nieces, Tracey Connor Whale of Little Silver and Jan Connor of Middletown.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015 at St. James R.C. Church in Red Bank with interment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations to Monmouth County SPCA, 260 Wall St., PO Box 93, Eatontown, NJ 07724 or the Popcorn Park Zoo Humane Way, PO Box 43, Forked River, NJ 08731 would be appreciated.
