AGE: 91 • Torrington, CT

Connie Nichols Prout, 91, formerly of Torrington, CT died of natural causes on January 13 in Tucson, AZ where she had lived for the past 12 years. She was a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Stanley Nichols and was raised in Long Branch, NJ. Connie graduated from Long Branch High School and later married Harold E. "Babe" Prout in 1945; they had three children prior to relocating to Torrington in 1955. She attended First Methodist Church in Torrington, was an active choir member there and also organized and directed a women's octet in town. She worked at the Torrington Library and later in the mental health field as an administrator and counselor while completing a college degree at University of Hartford. Connie was also an avid hiker and backpacker throughout her adult life and completed the entire Appalachian Trail with some good friends over a 20 year period ending in the early 1990s. She was predeceased by her husband in 1997 after 52 years of marriage, and was also predeceased by three sisters, Shirley Ryan, Virginia Schutz and Helen Sharar. Connie is survived by her children, Parker Prout of Mount Kisco, NY, Nick Prout of Roanoke, VA, Consie Prout Berghausen of Tucson, AZ and Chatham, MA, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 535 Broadway, Long Branch, NJ at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 25. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Humane Society of the US.
